Check out my new crib in Second Life

This is my new house (#139) in Second Life. I will be using it as a gallery (eportfolio) to store artifacts from teaching. It is a spin-off from my "Portfolioallery" project in EDUC 575 at the U of A. SL Home

Learning Experiences That Only Tech Assist With

"Fundamental learning experiences utilizing technology that cannot be replicated as well by traditional education methodology without technology and electronic mail."

While many schools' mission statements include "
lifelong learning" as an essential component, what are we really doing to foster this ability? We need to identify sound educational activities that foster connections with technology, students' basic learning skills and the classroom's content.

Basically, Scott believes there are fundamental learning experiences utilizing technology that cannot be replicated as well by traditional education methodology without technology and electronic mail.

  1. Do you think there are fundamental learning experiences that can't be replicated well without technology?
  2. Do you agree with the experiences that Scott has referenced? Are there others?
  3. Are there certain experiences when using technology that are important learning lessons that should be considered fundamental to one's learning?
  4. What specific technology skills should we focus on to truly provide students the skills to becoming a lifelong learner?

Welcome

I'd like to welcome everyone and anyone to my first Blog ever. I am a teacher. Previously I taught for thirteen years in the K-12 school system and I have taught for five years here at RDC. I am the Program Chair for the Bachelor of Education Program at Red Deer College in Red Deer, Alberta. My graduate work and interests are in the use of technology in the classroom in an integrated manner. I will be commencing my Doctoral studies with the Department of Elementary Education at the University of Alberta in January of 2009.

I am interested in carrying on a conversation with anyone interested in using technology in their classrooms at any level. I would hope that teachers would read this Blog and ask questions about using technology in their classrooms, offer real-world examples of how they are using technology in their classrooms and just carry-on a dialogue that is informative and useful to everyone.

My email address is brad.mcdiarmid@rdc.ab.ca and I am always willing to answer questions or just chat about the use of technology and why it is important for teachers to use technology in their teaching and in their students' learning.

Here is a link to a video that I think is very important for teachers to see.
